BUFFALO FLY
Buffalo Fly, Haematobia irritans exigua, is a small biting
fly, approximately 3-4mm in length. Feeding off cattle, it
causes irritations to the affected animal that can result in reduced
production.
Buffalo Fly is found from NSW through to the Top End. The Buffalo
Fly is a blood sucking fly that lives permanently on its host,
feeding constantly throughout the day. Females will leave the host
to lay eggs in freshly deposited dung, then returning to another
host. These eggs hatch within 24 hours and the grub burrows into
the dung. Growth of the grub is usually complete in four to five
days and pupation in another three to five days. After emerging,
the new fly will look for a host to feed on.
The extent of infestation will vary between animals. It is
generally found that bulls and dark coated cattle seem to be the
worst affected. Severe infestation affects weight gain and lower
milk production.
